Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
