The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
