The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
